James was what some ungracious folk might describe as a hobo, a tramp, a persona non grata, an itinerant wanderer of no fixed abode.
He preferred to think of himself as a fortunate free spirit and so, in the spirit of freedom and fortune, he was rooting through the dustbins of those poor house-bound slaves of society who were residents of Elm Avenue.
"Let's see what we got here" he muttered to himself as he gingerly moved a used tissue to one side.
His eyes roved over vegetable peel and torn packaging and rested on a partially obscured black plastic rectangle. Ever the optimist he fished the object out and was somewhat dismayed but not surprised to discover that it was not the smartphone he had imagined but was in fact an old T.V remote.
"What a load of junk!" he exclaimed as he tossed the offending item onto the street.
Something peculiar happened as the remote hit the ground. James went deaf.
Being an open-minded sort of fellow he picked the control back up and pressed 'mute'. He could hear again. He pressed another button and the colour slowly leached out of his surroundings. He pressed 'pause' and the world stopped around him.
"Bloody hell!" he said as his knees went weak and he sagged to the kerb.
At this point two things passed through James' mind, they were:
1) This is going to be very very useful,
and rather more dangerously,
2) I wonder what the standby button does.
Being a curious fellow James couldn't resist the temptation of seeing what would happen, despite the little voice of concern that piped-up within, and his grimy finger came to rest upon the little red button. He pressed it.

ReplyDeleteI kind of think you could leave out the 'black' at the end to make more ambiguous (whilst wondering yet again - where DO these ideas come from??? ;)
I seriously could do with one of those. I'd remove the standby button, though. Accidents happen. Nice one! :)
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow! Very nice. I am very, very (and a whole bunch more adjectives/adverbs) pleasantly surprised.

Hunters- glad you liked. Have a look around, there are plenty of other bits and bobs that you might like. All fiction should be filed under the 'writing' tab. Thanks for following!
Huntress not hunters! Typo...
DeleteGreat! This was quite humorous. I'm hoping he can still use the remote and turn the world back on and then continue to have adventures with this little control box!
