  • Oh my god! Sing If You Can presenter Stacey Solomon gets the chop

Oh my god! Sing If You Can presenter Stacey Solomon gets the chop
    By JODY THOMPSON
©Get shorty: Stacey Solomon showed off her new short hairstyle as she left ITV1's London studios after an appearance on Loose Women yesterday
She only recently went back to her roots and ditched the bleach to return to her natural brunette - and now Stacey Solomon has rung in the changes ever further by having her hair cut into a wavy bob.
The 21-year-old star revealed her brand new do as she left the ITV studios on London's South Bank after a guest appearance yesterday on Loose Women.
Smiling for the cameras as ever, Stacey showed off the style wearing a bright peach top with a white bow, taupe leggings and red bowed flipflops.
©Give us a wave: The Sing If You Can presenter has had her long brunette hair cut into a wavy bob
The former X Factor star, who won last year's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here - is famed for her non-stop talking and exclamations like 'Oh my god!'.
She came third on the X Factor in 2009, won last year’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me out Of Here and this year's Celebrity Mum Of the Year and lives in Dagenham, Essex, with her three-year-old son, Zachary.
Stacey currently co-hosts with comedy star Keith Lemon the hysterical Sing If You Can, a guilty Saturday night pleasure on ITV1 for many, but a show that also more importantly raises money for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.
    ©
Longer locks: Stacey, left, on I'm A Celebrity at the end of last year, and right, in 2009 during her time on X Factor
The show sees celebrities attempting to sing songs while all sorts of distractions happen around them - like last week, when football legend Rodney Marsh and singer Ray Quinn attempted to sing Blur's Parklike while surrounded by dogs.
Teenage Cancer Trust aims to ensure that every young person with cancer and their family receive the best possible care so the show is well worth watching and donating - or just donate anyway.
Meanwhile, ditzy Essex star Stacey, who confirmed last month that she is wokring on her debut album, also has a book coming out on 12 May.
Her autobiography, it's called My Story So Far.

  • Rounding up Political and Social Issues - Weekly Geeks 2009-08

For Weekly Geeks 2009-08, we revisited a theme from Dewey's Weekly Geeks: Political and Social Issues, originally presented in May 2008. The instructions were the same as before:

    1. Choose a political or social issue that matters to you. If you were a Weekly Geek last May and already did this theme, pick a different theme than the one you did at that time.

    2. Educate readers about your topic by telling us a little about it and any involvement you've had in this issue.

    3. Find books addressing your issue; they do not necessarily have to be books you’ve read. They can be non fiction, fiction, poetry, etc...Give a little synopsis of the book or a link to the description.

    4. Use images which you feel illustrate your topic.

The theme inspired posts on a wide range of issues. Be sure to go back to this week's assignment post to see everyone who participated and signed Mr. Linky! Meanwhile, here are some of the posts and topics that caught my attention:

    • Two moms talked about children's issues that affect more than just their own families - Julie of Booking Mama discussed food allergies, while Julie from A Small Accomplishment wrote about living with ADHD.
    • Crime-fiction bloggers Kerrie of Mysteries in Paradise and Dorte of DJ's Krimiblog both looked at how social issues are addressed as themes in their preferred genre.
    • Encounters between a believer and an atheist prompted Ariel Dalloway to tackle the science vs. religion debate.
    • At Worducopia, Ali wrote about the challenges of avoiding things "made in China" (labeled or not).
    • News and the media interested a few of the WG participants. Kim from Page after Page wrote about media bias, and Nymeth of Things Mean a Lot pondered racism in the media; meanwhile, Maree at Just Add Books wondered why celebrities are "news" in the first place. Maybe it's because they get people to read? On a related note, Frances of Nonsuch Books talked about literacy initiatives.
    • And please forgive the self-promotion, but I really do hope you'll read my own WG contribution on the topic of comprehensive sex education for teens at The 3 R's: Reading, 'Riting, and Randomness.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this round of Weekly Geeks! Stay tuned for the new assignment...

  • TGIF (Also, Hi:) )

I've been wanting to participate in Ginger from GReads! TGIF for a while now, but never seem to just... do it. And, as I'm sure you've noticed, this blog has been rather... empty this year. I've had a lot on my plate and haven't been reading hardly anything, let alone blogging. But I do still try to go through my Feed Reader when I have time, and I saw this weeks question, and I was like, DONE! So...

This weeks question is: Authors Are Our Celebrities: Have you ever contacted an author you admired? How did that experience go? If not, which author would you love to have a chat with?

Now, there are a LOT of authors that I'm a ridiculous fan girl over. And I've interacted with quite a few of them on Twitter and I've done interviews and had them comment on my blog, and a few of them have even mentioned me specifically on their own blog posts (having Stephanie Kuehnert mention my name specifically in a post thanking all of her fans about made me die and go to fan girl heaven)

BUT. It is no secret that I am a DIE HARD FAN of Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. And, if you haven't heard me talk about it, or push it on people or gush about it over and over then you are either very new to my part of the blogosphere, or I have failed.

Last year, when I hosted Just Contemporary November, I sent an email to Melina Marchetta, asking if she would participate, because I was SUCH a huge fan. And I am. Jellicoe Road is far and away my favorite, but Saving Francesca and The Piper's Son are both also included in my top favorites list. And she said yes!! It was AMAZING. My sister was over and she heard my squeak/squeal/flail all the way downstairs on the opposite end of the house. (True story, really happened...)

Here is a link to the interview. And, you know what else happened? THIS. This happened. You can click to read the post where I describe the best day EVER. And, take a look at the LOVELY pictures below.:)

And open it to find... -->

Who goes there? Victoria Beckham's sons disguise themselves with face-covering hoodies
    By JODY THOMPSON
©Now you see me...Romeo Beckham had zipped his Volcom hoodie right up over his face as he joined his mother Victoria on a New york shopping trip
They're three of the most famous little boys in the world - but it was hard to spot Victoria Beckham's sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz on a shopping trip with their famous mother in New York this week.
The stylish trio were all wearing Volcom hoodie jackets - and jokers Cruz, six, and eight-year-old Romeo had zipped them right up to cover their faces so they almost looked like superheroes.
Brooklyn, 12, was not so bashful however and braved the rainy weather with a bare face.
The comical scenes had shades of the days when the late Michael Jackson's children Prince, Paris and Blanket used to go out in public with scarves covering their faces.
©Spidey style: Cruz Beckham was also wearing a face-covering hoodie as left the Volcom store with his mother and brothers this week
The jackets also have a full-face zip and mesh lining in the hood, allowing the wearer to see through them - so the boys weren't in danger of tripping down the steps of the Soho shop as they left.
And Cruz's top almost made him look like Spider Man, with its web-style detail on the side and Spidey-style eyes on the face.
It's a Volcom Boys 2-7 Action Team Slim Youth Jacket and sells for around £40.
The Californian clothing company is a huge favourite with celebrities and hip hop stars, including Ashlee Simpson, Black Eyed Pea singer Fergie, Megan Fox and Avril Lavigne - as well as little boys wanting to look like superheroes.
©I'm a big kid now: Older brother Brooklyn was clearly too mature for those kind of shenanigans as he left the shop with his pregnant mother Victoria
Pregnant Victoria, 37, meanwhile covered her baby bump in a loose black top and a gigantic black handbag for the spree, while wearing killer black suede Louboutin ankle boots, black leggings and a black leather jacket.

Pregnant in very high heels! Kate Hudson wears towering Louboutin stilettos
    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
©Style over comfort: Kate Hudson arrived at the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio in Hollywood in sky high stilettos and a baby doll dress
Kate Hudson may just be weeks away from giving birth to her second child but she is still working hard promoting her new film and is looking great while doing it.
The 32-year-old actress was in full bloom as she arrived at the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio in Hollywood yesterday.
Always super stylish, Hudson wore a white ultra-mini baby doll dress that was adorned with blue embroidery and looked effortlessly maternity chic.
©Back down to earth: Hudson changed into flip flops as she left the studio with her fiancé and father of her baby, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy
She accented her outfit with a pair of sky high beige peep toe Christian Louboutin heels which showed off her toned legs.
Hudson joins the trend of pregnant celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe who continued to wear sky high heels throughout their pregnancies while many mothers-to-be opt for flats to cope with their swollen ankles.
©Waiting: Kate says she and Matt have not found out the sex of their baby and want it to be a surprise
The pregnant actress appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show to promote her new movie Something Borrowed.
She was later accompanied by her fiancé and the father of her baby, Muse rocker Matt Bellamy, as she left and was then decidedly more dressed down.
Hudson had changed into a long flowing brown dress, a cream cardigan and wore flip flops as she exited the television studio.
Bellamy gallantly carried her bag for her while also clutching his iPad.
©Promotional trail: Kate appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show yesterday in the same dress as she wore on Jimmy Kimmel
'I get really exhausted,' she told Ellen. 'More tired, more sick, more everything.'
Kate and Matt can't wait to meet their child, but refuse to find out ahead of time whether they are having a boy or a girl.
'I looked at Matthew and said: 'We're almost there',' says Hudson. 'It's so easy to find out.'
'But this way, there's no expectation on what the baby is. You're not thinking about what they look like. You're literally just going: 'Is it a boy or is it a girl?', she told USA Today.
The actress already has a seven-year-old son, Ryder, with her ex-husband Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson.

Rare conjoined twins who share a single body born in China
    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
©Rare condition: The two-head conjoined twin girls were born in a hospital in Suining city in southwest China's Sichuan province last week
A woman has given birth to a baby girl with two heads in the Chinese province of Sichuan.
The conjoined twins, who share a single body, two arms and two legs, were born by Caesarean section last week, according to officials.
The sisters are believed to suffer from a condition known as dicephalic parapagus - an extremely unusual form of twin conjoinment where only a single body develops.
©Intensive care: The twins will require around-the-clock attention
Because they share the same body, it is not possible to separate dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins.
The birth of dicephalic parapagus conjoined twins - who develop after a fertilized egg cell fails to divide fully - is extremely rare, with most cases occurring in southwest Asia and Africa.
©Sister act: Conjoined twins are extremely rare, occurring once in 100,000 births, while the dicephalic parapagus form of the condition is almost unheard of
However, there have been instances of dicephalic parapagus twins being born in the West.
In July 2009, Lisa Chamberlain, from Portsmouth, gave birth to twins Joshua and Jayden, who shared the same single body. Joshua was stillborn while his brother lived for 32 minutes before dying in his mother's arms.
And in the U.S. dicephalic parapagus twins Abigail and Brittany Hensel have become media celebrities, appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show and featuring in television documentaries.
The sisters, now 21, from Minnesota, appear to share a perfectly normal single body, although in fact several of their internal organs are doubled up.
While each is able to eat and write separately and simultaneously, activities such as walking and driving a car must be co-ordinated.

  • Admit One: My Life in Film

Admit One: My Life in Film

"Celluloid is about dreams, movies are about fantasy, and motion picture are about things you couldn't possibly even imagine in your wildest dreams, brought vividly to life in front of your very eyes" (xv). This is how Emmett James' memoir Admit One: My Life in Film

begins, and based on that quote alone I had fairly high expectations for this book. Each chapter in the narrative begins with a movie, the very first is the Jungle Book, a quick synopsis of the movie and then moves into James' own story. The memoir is divided into two parts. The first, Coming Attractions, is about his life growing up in and outside of London as a child deeply obsessed with movies and everything that went along with him. The second half, Feature Presentation, is about his life as a struggling actor in Hollywood, trying to make a career out of his childhood passion.

I loved the way this book was set up, I just wish it would have been executed a little bit better. There were times in most of the chapters in the book where I had a hard time remembering what movie he started talking about. The first few chapters stayed with the movie alright, but the tangents kept getting more confusing as the book went on. It felt like a gimmick, because most of the movies really had nothing to do with the story he was telling. I got so caught up in trying to make a connection to the movie that I could enjoy the great storytelling and humor that was happening in the book. And let's be clear about that, this is a funny book. James is very funny, comparing his mother to the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz and talking about one of his first acting jobs dressing up as a woman. He pokes fun at others, but he also pokes fun at himself and that is a saving grace in this book.

But even though he is a good storyteller, and he can make me laugh so hard my abs get a good workout, I wish there was a little more substance to this story. Yeah it's interesting, but I think there were things James could have pushed a little harder. He begins to in a later chapter about working on the movie the Titanic; "The joy, excitement, and arrogance I had felt upon leaving Los Angeles had been quickly replaced by an overwhelming sense of guilt and sadness. It struck me as more than a little ironic that I was making my way to participate in a film surrounding the horrors of an unforgiving class system. Here, now, in front of me eyes, nearly one hundred years later, was the most blatant wealth and poverty line I had every physically experienced" (156). He begins to push here, into the falsity of movies, celebrities, and film making, but he pulls away too quickly. This is something that I really struggled with towards the end of the book. It seemed like the story got too stuck int he gimmick of the movies that it couldn't explore throughout the book what was finally found at the end. James says he didn't want to be a celebrity, but he wanted to be an actor. And there is a difference, one that I don't ever really think about. He talks about how his views have changed. The ending was the most interesting part of the memoir. I wanted to transplant some of that deep thinking into the first half of the book, which basically just felt like childhood stories that went nowhere.

This book got a C. I received the book from a publicist.

I am an Amazon Affiliate. If you make a purchase using one of my links I will earn a small percentage which will then go back into this blog.
