  • Dewey's Readathon

    Dewey's Readathon

I am participating in the Dewey Readathon today! My readathon mornings are always messed up. I always oversleep, and it seems like I'm always going to my parents' house for the weekend. This readathon was new different. I got started about two hours late, nine o'clock my time. I haven't wasted much time though, one and a half books finished. Jason and I made a little pit stop in Pella, Iowa on the way home to meet some of family for lunch. Now I'm at my parents' house to read for an hour before we go get our engagement pictures taken.

    Time spent reading: 15/21
    Pages read: 704
    Hours listened: 3
Books completed: The Walking Dead Volume 2 by Robert Kirkman, Welcome to My Country by Lauren Slater, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The Pharmacist's Mate by Amy Fusselman
    Activities completed: None
    Trees planted: 8

I'll be returning to update this post throughout the day. You might be wondering about trees planted. For each book I finish during the readathon I am planting two trees through Eco-Libris.

Update: My engagement pictures are complete! We had a lot of fun getting out pictures taken and I read a little Shakespeare during the photo shoot. I'm sure I'll share some of those later. For now I will just say The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a fantastic book. A really quick read too! Also, I didn't fill this out during hour one, so I'm doing it now.

    1) My parents' house in Altoona, Iowa. Started at my house in Iowa City, Iowa and read on the road in between.
    2) I love essays, almond macaroons are my favorite cookie, and I'm probably going camping next weekend.
    3) 10
    4) I don't really have any specific goals this time around, I'm just hoping to get a lot of reading done!
    5) Relax and have fun. Try to get some actual reading in instead of checking up on everyone else's blogs!

Update: It's now 11:18 here. I went and got some dinner, took a nap, and started two books. I was originally planning on reading Molly Fox's Birthday, but decided it wasn't really working for today. Right now I'm reading Welcome to my Country by Lauren Slater instead. I've been working on some art projects for school while listening to Genghis Kahn and the Making of the Modern World, which has been a nice break from reading and a good opportunity to get some work done. Now I think I'm going to get back to some real text reading for a few hours. Who is still out there? Are you hanging in there?

Update: A few hours have gone by since my last update. I'm officially starting to get tired. I've accomplished a lot more in this readathon than I thought I would. I've finished four books and made a pretty good dent in the beginning of an audiobook. I even managed to get a little homework done. In the last few hours I read a graphic novel to give my eyes a rest from all the text. In the next couple hours I think I might listen to some audio while trying to get some more homework done and then see how I feel.

Update: This will probably be my final update for the readathon. My eyes are heavy and I'm at the beginning of a book which is making it difficult for me to keep up with it. I might try to get up after a little nap to read just a little bit more-but I am basically done for this readathon. I also keep thinking about the paper I have to write tomorrow and how I should probably be a little coherent for that!

How is your readathon going? If you're not participating then how are you spending your Saturday?

I am an Amazon Affiliate. If you make a purchase using one of my links I will earn a small percentage which will then go back into this blog.

  • Readathon Tomorrow!

    Readathon Tomorrow!

Everyone is buzzing about tomorrow's readathon, myself included. In case you're a Readathon virgin you can check out the Dewey's Readathon Website for more info. This will be my second and a half readathon. I say second and a half because the Dewey's Readathon last October was a surprise for me and I had only been blogging for a few days when it happened. I was at home and when I got on Twitter I saw that everyone was talking about some readathon, so I decided to join in! I didn't do that much reading really, but I enjoyed the taste I got so much that I decided to join in on Dreadlock Girl's readathon in December. I made it 20 hours and read for a total of 14 of those 20 hours, check out my wrap-up post to see how coherent I was.

Tomorrow I'm starting at 7 AM and I will be reading until 5:30 because then I have to go to the Englert theatre in downtown Iowa City to volunteer for the Indian Student Alliance. I'm planning on taking a graphic novel with me for any spare time I have while I'm there. Then I'll be back around eleven to keep the reading going, I'm excited to see how long I can make it this time! I might not make it as long as I originally planned though, because I seem to have a cold right now.

I have a stack of fairly short books to read for tomorrow, and most of them are for the Shelf Discovery Challenge which is over this month and I need to finish. Those are really my priority. I have a few other books on the pile though.

    Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
    Fifteen by Beverly Cleary
    Go Ask Alice by "Anonymous"
    Blubber by Judy Blume
Chicken with Plums by Marjane Satrapi
Wild Ducks Flying Backward by Tom Robbins

Later today I go shopping for some snacks! I'm thinking crackers, veggies, fruit, peanut butter, and chocolate. All the essentials of course. I hope you'll join in on the Readathon if you can- I know you'll have fun!

    Sunday Salon: Readathon Survival
    The Sunday Salon.com

Well I survived most of the Readathon yesterday! I want to make it a little longer than I did during my last Readathon and I ended up going the same amount of time- but that's not what is really important. What was really important was that I completed my main goal, finish the Shelf Discovery challenge. Since I did that I feel like I was successful, and I also read more pages this time than last. I can't wait for the next Readathon, and next time around I think I might cheerlead and I also want to read for charity.

This week I posted a review of Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Thomas Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor. The rest of the week was pretty much all Readathon preparation and experience- but hey, it's a marathon! Because of the Readathon I have a lot of reviews to write, I'm probably going to be writing April reviews well into May, which may not be fun for you if you're curious as to my thoughts about a book but it's going to be really fun for me because I like to have review written ahead of time!

I'm at work right now and I'm folding pamphlets for moving out of the dorms. I can't believe it's almost that time of year! Next year will be my first year out of the dorms; I'm moving into my first apartment in August and I am so excited. I'm sure my dad and I will have fun loading up two bookshelves from my dorm room now and taking three to my apartment next year, all in about a three month time span. Muscles, muscles!

On another personal note, I can't believe I'm almost finished with my second year of college! I'm halfway through my undergrad years! It's insane, things that once seemed unforgettable are now becoming distant memories to me. It's sad but there are so many new and wonderful things happening in my life that I can't complain. Soon I'll be filling out applications for grad school... but let's not think about that right now. :)

  • The Sunday Salon: Readathon Recovery

    The Sunday Salon: Readathon Recovery
    The Sunday Salon.com

Well I made it through twenty hours of Dreadlock Girl's Readathon. I was happy with that, I think I could have made it all 24 hours if my boyfriend wouldn't have been snoring. The readathon made this past week a lot more successful than it would have been otherwise since I've mostly been working on papers lately. I should actually be working on papers right now, but I just woke up so I'm trying to ease myself in. Once I get to Wednesday though I will be D-O-N-E!!! Then I will be reading a lot, which will be nice.

On Monday I posted a review of Do Travel Writers Go to Hell? by Thomas Kohnstamm. It wasn't a very favorable review because I thought the book was ridiculous trash, so if you like reading that sort of thing or if you just like reading reviews then you should check that one out. I do wonder if it's something I'm not getting because I'm not really a partier or a guy?

Wednesday I did my first children's book review of Boris and Bella by Carolyn Crimi. I loved this book and couldn't resist posting about it even though I normally do not write about children's books. I think I might start posting about them more often though as I read several in the course of a week. This will probably be a change I will make more around January because I'm almost done with tutoring for this semester.

This leads me into my next post, which is the epitome of all my challenge posts: the 2010 Reading Resolutions Challenge hosted by Jenny Loves to Read. In this post I list all of the challenges I will be participating in next year as well as some changes I would like to make in my reading habits or on my blog.

Yesterday I read and finished three books which I will be reviewing this week. The books are Are You There God? It's me Margaret by Judy Blume, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron, and Shirley Volume One by Kaoru Mori. I started In a Gilded Cage by Rhys Bowen which I should be finishing this week and will hopefully have reviewed by next weekend. Today I am finishing Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and will most likely review that book on Monday. Lots of good stuff coming up this week so be sure to come back!

Finally I would like to send some shout outs and thank yous. Thanks to Dreadlock Girl for hosting the readathon and to I Heart Monster, Beth Fish Reads, Seriously Reading, Ronnica at Book Nook Club, Reads4Pleasure, Chick Loves Lit, and Tif Talks Books for hosting some great memes and/or giveaways during the readathon. And a special thanks goes out to Perpetual Spiral who was my main partner in crime during the readathon. Happy Reading!

  • Readathon Hours 10-20, Final Post

I have surpassed my goals for today! So it seems like a good time to go to bed, especially since I'm getting over a cold and I have to work tomorrow afternoon as well as finish two history papers. Oh tomorrow will be a fun day. Coming into this Readathon I was hoping to finish the Shelf Discovery Challenge, which I did! I only had three books finished for the challenge, which ends April 30, and now I have finished all 6. Easy YA books are greats reads for Readathons, although they weren't my favorite books I read today. My stats are pretty similar to my last reading challenge, but for some reason I feel more accomplished. Probably because I actually finished more books. Another reason might be that when I took a look at how this Readathon has fit into my overall 2010 reading I was amazed! At the beginning of this Readathon I had read 29 books in 2010, and now I've finished 34 and I'm well on my way to getting to 35. So look at that, completed a challenge, read some good books, almost to 35 books in 2010 which puts me well on my way to my unadvertised goal of 100 books this year. Overall, a great day.

Title of book(s) read since last update: Go Ask Alice by Anonymous, Chicken with Plums by Marjane Satrapi, Blubber by Judy Blume, and I'm Sorry You Feel That Way by Diana Joseph
Number of books read since you started: Finished 5, Read 6 (I'm more than halfway!)
Pages read since last update: 372
Running total of pages read since you started: 897
Amount of time spent reading since last update: 5
Running total of time spent reading since you started:12
Mini-challenges completed: Miss Remmers' Kick-off Challenge, I Just Wanna Sit Here and Read's Soundtrack Challenge, and 'Til We Read Again's And The Nominees Are challenge.

Thanks to all of the great co-hosts for the Readathon, the cheerleaders, and the mini-challenge hosts! You guys all helped make this day a lot of fun!

  • Dewey's Readathon

    Dewey's Readathon

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 9, is the Dewey Readathon! I think this is the fourth readathon I have participated in-- which is kind of amazing because A year ago I'd never done any readathon before ever. I probably won't really shoot to read 24 hours tomorrow, in the past I've reached close to 20 and that's good enough for me. I think I will just read as much as I can and take some homework breaks in between. I'm going to be with my parents tomorrow so hopefully that means my mom will cook me lots of food to eat while I'm reading.

Usually I try to read several short books for readathons because it makes me feel extremely accomplished, but this time around I'm going to read three YA books that have been in my TBR pile for quite awhile. My first priority is to read Splendor and finish the Luxe series for good. I started the series at the beginning of 2010 and it's been a constant for me all year, but I'm ready to find out how it ends. Next is The Book Thief

, which is quite long (550 pages) but I've heard from several people that they could not put this book down, so hopefully I feel the same. And my third book is Shiver

, the first book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. When Linger came out a few months ago the cover really struck me and everyone was talking about it. I had never heard of Shiver before, but I love the idea of the book so hopefully I'll enjoy that. The pretty blue ink can't hurt things- right?

One thing I'm doing that I haven't done before is donate to a charity. I have been very upset by the recent young, gay suicides so for every page I read I am going to donate .03 cents to The Trevor Project. If I finish all of my books that amounts to 40.00.

Usually I update every four hours during the readathon and will probably do that tomorrow as well. Good luck to all you readathoners!

  • Readathon Hours 1-2

Well I'm two hours in to the readathon. I didn't start reading until about an hour ago because I had a bit of a problem getting out of bed. I'm sure no one can relate to that! I had some pop tarts and Vitamin Water for breakfast, that was good. The first book in my readathon is Are You There God? It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume, which I'm reading for Booking Mama's Shelf Discovery Challenge. I didn't think I'd read it before, but now that I have gotten into it I think I have read it. I recognize the story. I obviously relate to Margaret with the whole growing up teenager business (I can sure remember those days) but I'm surprised that the person I'm really relating to is her teacher, Mr. Benedict. The first day he shows up and it's his first job so he is scared of the kids. I can really relate to that as a tutor and also just as someone who is young and scared about the real world.

    So here are my stats:
Books Read: Are You There God? It's Me Margaret
    Pages Read: 72
    Total Books Finished: 0
    Total Pages Read: 72
Total Time Spent Reading: 1 hour

I'm also going to do I Heart Monster's meme right now. Happy reading!

  • Readathon

I woke up this morning to find that there is a 24 hour readathon going on today. I'm about five hours behind but I figure now is as good a time to start as any. I'm mostly going to be using this as an excuse to finish Sense and Sensibility for good. I've been promising myself to read the last thirty pages for about three weeks now and it just never happens. Then I plan to move on to the first volume of Emma: A Victorian Romance which I scored in Iowa City's Daydream comics yesterday. Once I finish both of those I think I will feel fairly accomplished. I'm at my parents house right now so I don't have a lot of my books with me, I'll probably just work on finishing the ones I've already started, Lady Audley's Secret and And Only to Deceive.

If you're interested in the readathon you can learn more and sign up here.

  • Readathon Hour 1

I've been reading for one hour and I'm already off to a good start! I decided to take a quick break and check out the Readathon site and do whatever challenges are post. Miss Remmers' Mini-Challenge is to talk about your kick-off strategy. I'm not really surrounded by anything right now, but I did know I wanted to start off with Fahrenheit 451 since it was the heaviest book in my pile but still short. I should still be able to accomplish something early in the day, but I'm also reading the hardest book while I'm still fresh. I made myself a pillow fort on my bed because I knew I wouldn't want to get out of bed at seven o'clock in the morning, so all I had to do was wake up, grab my book, and start reading. Eventually my tummy started to growl, so that is when I decided to stop, have a pop-tart, and do this mini-challenge.

On the Dewey website they asked you to answer the following questions for hour one:
Where are you reading from today? Since waking up an hour ago I've been reading Fahrenheit 451.
3 facts about me … I am a sophomore at the University of Iowa. I have flowers on my desk but they are starting to wilt. I read about museums for fun.
How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? 6
Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I would really like to finish the Shelf Discovery Challenge today, we'll see.

Well I'm back to read for awhile. I'll be back in a few hours!

  • Readathon Hours 9-12

    Readathon Hours 9-12

Are we really halfway done already? That seems so hard to believe. In the last four hours I finally got some solid reading done, and it looks like I will finish my book in the next hour. Finally!

    Pages Read:216
    Books Read: 0
Money raised for Trevor Project: $9.57
Food consumed: Omelette, hashbrowns, orange, and toast (my mom made me breakfast). Pudding and gummy worms. Turkey club sandwich.
    Time spent reading: 5 hours

This time around I did the audiobook mini-challenge and I'm posting the mid-event survey.

    Mid-Event Survey:
    1. What are you reading right now? I'm finishing up Splendor by Anna Godbersen.
    2. How many books have you read so far? Almost finished one.
    3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? After listening to the audiobook sample of The Book Thief I am really excited to read it!
    4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day? No.
    5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I've had interruptions for eating mostly, but I've taken them in stride. After several readathons you realize that there is no way you'll get through it without interruptions.

    6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I'm surprised by how hungry I've been, I think I've ate more during this readathon than any other.
    7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? More "active" mini-challenges that get you up moving for awhile.
    8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year? I would probably start with a shorter book first, although I knew that going into this.
    9. Are you getting tired yet? No chance!
    10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? Don't be afraid to take a mini nap in the middle of that day, it helps keep you going into the wee hours.

I am an Amazon Affiliate. If you make a purchase using one of my links I will earn a small percentage which will then go back into this blog.

  • Hour 13: Dewey's Readathon

Well I'm over halfway through. I'm actually pretty proud of myself because without the readathon I would not have gotten this much reading done this weekend. I've decided to leave Lady Audley's Secret for later because a) It is late b) I'm reading it for class c) I'm already way ahead. So I will read that tomorrow.

I think my next project is going to be And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie because I am reading it for the Barnes and Noble Literature by Women book club. I've had the book for years just sitting in a drawer so I'll give it a shot tonight. Eventually though I'm going to have to go to bd, but I don't think I'm quite ready yet.

Books Read: And Only to Deceive by Tasha Alexander
    Pages Read: 180
Total Books Read: And Only to Deceive Emma: A Victorian Romance Volume One, and Sense and Sensibility (And I saw Where the Wild Things Are)
    Total Pages Read: 466

  • Hour Seven: Dewey's Readathon

Books Read: Reading And Only to Deceive by Tasha Alexander
    Pages Read: 40
Total Books Read: Emma: A Victorian Romance Volume One and Sense and Sensibility
    Total Pages Read: 286

Haven't made much progress because of dinner and I'm afraid I probably won't make much more progress for the rest of evening because I'm going to Where the Wild Things Are which is book related. I do plan on finishing And Only to Deceive tonight if possible. I'm looking forward to a more planned readathon in December thanks to Dreadlock Girl Reads. If nothing else I've enjoyed finding all of these great book blogs to look at in the future!

  • Readathon Hours 18-20, Final Post

Yes friends, the festivities are beginning to wind down and so am I. Boyfriend has fallen asleep and I have homework to do to tomorrow. Perhaps if I was alone and didn't have school I could make it to the end, actually I'm pretty sure I could. For the past few hours I've been reading In a Gilded Cage by Rhys Bowen. It's about a female detective named Molly Murphy. She is working on a few cases and it is right amidst the suffrage movement. She has a serious boyfriend, but she is deciding if marriage and children are really right for her. she thinks her career is more important. It's been a good book to end on; quick and interesting.

I want to give big thanks to Dreadlock Girl for hosting this readathon and doing an awesome job! I also want to thank everyone who has stopped by my blog. If you're interested in hearing more about any of the books I've been reading today then come back this week as I will be posting reviews of all the books in the coming days. Tomorrow is Sunday Salon and I will be finishing Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and well probably finish up In a Gilded Cage early this week. There have been lots of snacks, lots of books, and lots of good conversation. Why can't we do this every weekend?!?! Oh... right... sleep.

    My final stats:
Books Read: In a Gilded Cage, Shirley Volume One, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor and Are You There God? It's Me Margaret
    Pages Read: 100
    Total Books Finished: 3.4

  • Sunday Salon: Readathon & 100 Reviews

Sunday Salon: Readathon & 100 Reviews
    The Sunday Salon.com

I ended up falling asleep during the readathon last night, which I was fully expecting. I was looking forward to getting a chance to just read as much as I wanted, but because of my stress level I knew staying up 24 hours was probably not a really good idea for me right now. I still got almost halfway into The Book Thief

    and finished all of Splendor

, so I am pretty pleased with the results. I read 691 pages yesterday for a total of $20.73 raised for The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is an organization that provides resources for LGBTQ teens, one of which is a suicide/help hotline teens can call 24/7. Because of all the recent suicides I thought that would be a good organization to donate to. Suicide, in general, is a horrible thing and I come from a place where a lot of suicides have occurred. I've seen the effects of suicide several times, though never experienced them personally. I can't imagine what it would be like for a parent or friend to lose a loved one due to suicide.

Onto a happier note, I posted my 100th book review on Wednesday! The 100th book I reviewed was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The review came at a pretty nifty time as well, because my one year anniversary is here in about a week! The first book I ever reviewed on here was And Only To Deceive by Tasha Alexander. It's a very sad review, only two paragraphs long. I must say I think I've come quite a long way since that first review.

And I'll I've got left is a plea for you to check out my new podcast!

  • 48 Hour Reading Challenge

So, I know I have been going a little crazy with the posting. I feel like I've posted a lot in the last few days... Sorry about that. I'll keep this one short.:)

Mother Reader is hosting a 48 hour reading challenge on her blog this weekend. From Friday to Sunday, you pick your best, consecutive 48 hours and you read, all that you can. Taking time to write reviews of the books read counts for your time, as does 1 hour of social networking (blog/twitter comments) per 5 hours of reading time.

I'm behind on my reading (although, not as behind as on reviews!) so this chance to just read like crazy is awesome, and pretty much exactly what I need.

So, I'm starting now (3pm) and will go until 3pm on Sunday afternoon, MST. I'll most likely post another update tomorrow at some point, let you all see how my progress is going, and will also post on Sunday, to let you know how I did.

Because I'm crazy & also have no problems double dipping, I'm also participating in the Saturday readathon as Awesome Bookworm 's blog. So, on Saturday, I'll be putting a more intense focus on reading, and less on writing reviews (even more behind...) and not as much tweet checking.:) But, it should still be a lot of fun! The 24 hour readathons are even more motivating!:)

If any of you are participating in any of these readathons I'd love to hear from you! Stop by, say hello, leave a link, tell me what you're reading etc.

    Wish me luck!:) Happy Reading

What I hope to get read:

The Boys Next Door/Endless Summer — Jennifer Echols
    Mermaid Summer — Mollie Hunter
Amy and Roger's Epic Detour — Morgan Matson
    Stolen — Lucy Christopher
Please Ignore Vera Dietz — A.S. King
    Dobry — Monica Shannon
    That Summer — Sarah Dessen
The Burning Bridge — John Flanagan
Twenty Boy Summer — Sarah Ockler

  • Readathon Hours 1-4

    Readathon Hours 1-4

Well I woke up later than I meant to this morning, but I am 1/4 of the way into Splendor and I must say it's the perfect book to start my day with because I'm picking up in the middle of one of my favorite book series. I've been at my parent's house in Des Moines all morning because I unexpectedly had to come back yesterday, but shortly after I put this up I will ride back to Iowa City-- a one and half hour drive. Since I'm not driving though hopefully I will get a little bit of reading in.

I plan to post more about the Trevor Project later, but I just wanted to give a shout-out to Thomas at My Porch who has decided to join me in donating to the Trevor Project. For every page he reads he will donate 5 cents and for every page I read he will donate another 5 cents-- so I better get reading!

  • Readathon Hours 3-4

Four hours have gone by and I have finished one book! It's very exciting. I'm glad I started off with Are You There God? It's Me Margaret because it was an easy read and got me on track. I'm at work for the next four hours, but I work at a front desk so I'll still be reading away. The next book on my list is Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron. Hopefully it will be a pretty quick read, it's about 300 pages. Thanks to everyone who has been checking in on me and I hope you all are having successful readathons!

    So here are my stats:
Books Read: Are You There God? It's Me Margaret
    Pages Read: 77
    Total Books Finished: 1
    Total Pages Read: 149
Total Time Spent Reading: 2.5 hours
Memes Completed: I Heart Monster's Compliments

    Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon is Here!

And I'm ready! I got 9 hours of sleep last night so I'm rested up!

I will do regular updates on Twitter, so please follow my progress there. In addition, I will be updating this post every 2-3 hours with my progress. The official hashtag for the Read-a-thon is #readathon, so you can follow the progress of other readers as well.

And please, check out the read-a-thon web site to see all the other readers participating in the Read-a-thon!

Here is a picture of the books I plan to read during the read-a-thon. This doesn't include the ARCs that I have to read.

Ok, so check back periodically to see my progress. Please don't forget to visit my Countdown to Dewey's Read-a-thon post and help me support Books for Soldiers!
